Miami International Airport Information

General Information One of the largest airports in the country, Miami International Airport is the primary gateway connecting passengers traveling between the U.S., the Caribbean and South America. Miami International Airport is located close to the major tourist destination of Florida and is one of the world's busiest airports in terms of international passenger and freight movement. It currently serves 134 destinations. History Miami International Airport was opened in 1928, as a field for Pan American Airways Corporation. When Pan American Airways shifted its operations to a different location, the airport was largely left deserted. Six years later, Eastern Airlines started using the airport and was followed by National Airlines three years later. Today the airport is a property of the Miami-Dade County government and is operated by the government's aviation department. Spread over 3,300 acres of land, the airport is the largest in Florida and currently ranks first busiest for international freight among U.S. airports. Considering only the volume of international passengers, the airport is the second busiest in the United States. Infrastructure The airport has three terminals – North, South and Central. There are a total of six concourses spread across these terminals. The airport has been undergoing an extensive capital improvement programme, which includes a brand new North Terminal. Every terminal is connected to a dedicated car parking area and the terminals have been interlinked to allow passengers to walk between them. Services Situated 14 kilometers from downtown Miami, the Miami International Airport is easily accessible and well connected to the city with buses, shuttles and taxis serving it. A free passenger transit system, the MIA Mover, connects the airport to chief ground transportation services, the Metrorail and the Metrobus operating from the Miami Central Station. There is also a consolidated car rental facility which brings together the services of 16 rental companies under a single roof. The airport has disability access, a dedicated praying area, internet access, a lost and found center as well as several shops, restaurants and lounges.
